Students from this band are of a unique breed of performers. Unlike most other university pep and marching bands these students are non-music major musicians. So the nature of the students in this band, are serious musicians with interests ranging from pharmacy to criminal justice, in essence getting the best of both worlds, studying a scope of interest while playing in one of the premier college bands in the country. These players are usually the first chair or section leaders of their high school bands before coming to St. John's as a lot of them come with titles of all-state and all-county.
The pep band holds rehearsal weekly throughout the year. The fruit of their labor has been evident, doubling their library of tunes, year after year, from 22 songs to a total of 41 selections to complete their library. Some of their new tunes include Pour Some Sugar on Me, Hey-Ya, Hawaii 5-0, Wooly Bully, Ole' (as heard at Men's Soccer games), Walking On The Sun, and Come out and Play. They have also managed to bring back crowd favorites, Woodchoppers Ball, Gospel John and You Can Call Me Al.
