QUEENS, N.Y. - With five top 16 finishes, led by freshman Sabine Schneider's 10th-place time, the Red Storm outpaced nine other teams from around the tri-state area for a second-place finish at Fairfield University's 32nd Annual Father Leeber S.J. Invitational on Saturday. The team finished with 66 points, as five of the seven point-scoring runners finished in the top 16 of the 5K race. St. John's finished with an average time of 20:04.90, 23.55 seconds better than their first race of the season at Hofstra. Sacred Heart won the 11-team invitational with 35 points and an average time of 19:37.85. Schneider clocked in at 19:53.48, while Red Storm teammate, senior Tyneka Greene, finished in 11th-place with a season-best time of 19:59.29 Following close behind, the trio of underclassmen, Aryon Trujillo, Nicole Cocozza and Sarah Sudbury crossed the tape 14th, 15th, 16th with times of 20:07.93, 20:10.20 and 20:13.57, respectively. Sophomore Kayla Regulski and junior Pamela Petruski also scored for St. John's. Regulski's time of 20:37.88 was good for 29th place, while Petruski's 36th-place finish of 20:51.49 marked a season-best time. Junior Sarah Fry, senior Rakibat Abiola and sophomores Katrina Schaefer, Kim Piard and Ashlee Payne also competed for St. John's finishing 38th, 55th, 73rd, 77th and 85th.
Next up, St. John's has a weekend break before competing at the Metropolitan Championships on Oct. 10. The race will be the first of four championship races held at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, N.Y., this season.
