Coral Gables, Fla.The St. Johns volleyball team fell to the University of Miami, 3-0 (30-20, 30-27, 30-19), in a match played at the Knight Complex in Coral Gables, Fla. The Red Storm fall to 15-13 overall and 4-4 in the BIG EAST, while the Hurricanes improve to 20-3 overall and 6-2 in the BIG EAST.
Miami jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a, 30-20, victory in game one. The Hurricanes controlled play for most of the game holding an advantage in hitting percentage (.308-.026) and blocks (4-2). The Red Storm were strong defensively, out digging the Hurricanes, 18-14. St. Johns senior Sarah McCrary (Walnut, Calif.) recorded a game-high 6 digs and junior Robyn Kurasaki (Mililani, Hawaii) dished out 10 assists. Game two started differently, as the Red Storm jumped out to a 16-12 advantage on key kills from freshman Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.). The Hurricanes countered with a 7-0 run to take a 19-17 lead and was able to hold off a late game St. Johns charge for a 30-27 victory. The Red Storm held the advantage in hitting percentage (.333-.308) and were led by Ahlerss eight kills. Miami closed out the match with a convincing 30-19 victory in game three. The Hurricanes held the advantage in hitting percentage, out hitting the Red Storm .324-.103. For the match, St. Johns was led by Ahlers, who recorded 16 kills to move into second place on the St. Johns all-time list for kills in a single season. McCrary finished with 14 kills and Kurasaki dished out 38 assists. Sophomore Yana Ruban (Kiev, Ukraine) added 5 kills and freshman libero Shannon Engle (San Jose, Calif.) tallied 13 digs.
The Red Storm return to action on Sunday, November 3 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on the Hokies. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
