Freshman Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii/Maryknoll) of the St. Johns volleyball team was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 29.
Kurasaki, who earned her third BIG EAST honor of the season, broke her own school record on Sunday with 83 assists in a dramatic five-game victory over league rival Syracuse in Alumni Hall. The mark shattered her previous total of 76, which she amassed in a five-game win at West Virginia a week earlier. For the week, Kurasaki racked up 142 assists, 22 digs, three aces and three blocks. She now has 1,181 assists in her career, the third-highest total ever in school history. Kurasaki is ranked sixth in the league standings in assists per game with an 11.47 average.
The Red Storm are 22-7 overall and are tied with Georgetown for fourth in the BIG EAST with a 5-3 league mark. This weekend the Storm travel to Washington D.C. for a showdown with the Hoyas on Sunday, November 5. This match is slated for 5:00.
