JAMAICA, N.Y. Senior Olga Roudovski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay) recorded a match-high 27 kills and 17 digs to lead the St. Johns University volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (16-14, 15-8, 7-15, 15-10) over visiting Boston College in a BIG EAST Conference match Friday evening in Alumni Hall. The win was the second straight for the Storm, who improve to 17-4, 2-1, while Boston College falls to 5-12, 1-2.
In the first three games, the Red Storm found themselves trailing early, but managed to mount a strong comeback in the first two. In Game 1, BC jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before the Storm rallied to tie the game at 7-7. A kill by freshman Rosalyn Dang (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) gave the Storm their first lead of the match at 9-8, and from there the momentum of the game appeared to shift SJUs way. But the Eagles came storming back to tie the game at 14-14, before the Storm finally put it away 16-14. The Eagles again got off to a fast start in the second game, going up 5-2. The Storm then rallied to take a 6-5 lead and never trailed again in the game. St. Johns went on to take the second game 15-8, hitting .390 as a team. The third game was all Boston College, as they ran away with it early, mounting a 14-2 advantage, before the SJU was able to deny the Eagles five game points. The Eagles eventually pulled out the third game, 15-7. In the fourth game, it was the Red Storms turn to set the pace in the early going, as they scored the first four points of the game. The Eagles would tie thing up at 6-6 before the Storm managed to extend their lead to 10-8. The Eagles never got closer than that as the Storm closed out the match by taking the fourth game 15-10. Roudovski was one of five SJU hitters to tally double figures in kills. Senior Aleeza Miller (Los Angeles, Calif./Cal-Berkeley) tallied 16 kills while Dang contributed 14. Junior Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) had a double double with 10 kills and 15 digs, while senior Amanda Berg (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) finished with 13 kills and six total blocks. Freshman Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii/Punahou) assisted on 62 of the Storms 80 kills and had eight digs.
The Storm will return to Alumni Hall on Sunday, October 8 to host BIG EAST rival Providence College at 4:00.
