QUEENS, NY (November 27, 2004) - The St. John's University volleyball team fell to Wake Forest 3-1 (30-24, 30-23, 34-32, 30-15) tonight in the consolation match of the 2004 St. John's Classic at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm end their season with a record of 15-16, while the Demon Deacons improve to 13-17. Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, NY), who was named to the All-Tournament team, led the Red Storm with 21 kills. Setter Lisa Tedder (Coos Bay, OR) recorded a double-double with 51 assists and 14 digs. Libero Nicole Colaluca (Napperville, IL) notched 28 digs in the four-game loss. In game one, setter Erin Borhart led the Demon Deacons to a quick 20-13 lead with several straight kills at the net. At 27-19, the Red Storm went on a run led by aggressive serving by Ahlers, but was not enough as Wake Forest took game one, 30-24. Tied throughout the 17th point in the second game, Wake Forest scored several straight points to pull on top at 22. Playing in her last game as a member of the St. John's volleyball team, Yana Ruban (Kiev, Ukraine) had two straight kills to lead the Red Storm attack, but was not enough as the Demon Deacons took game two, 30-23. Down 0-2, the Red Storm pulled out to a quick lead against the Demon Deacons with kills by middle hitter Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados). At 26-24, freshman LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, CA) put one away down the line to increase the Red Storm momentum. With St. John's up at 29-27, Wake Forest answered back with two straight kills by Borhart to keep the Demon Deacons alive. The two teams rallied back and forth past the 30 point mark until finally Wake Forest made two unforced errors to give St. John's game three, 34-32.
Up 2-1 in games, Wake Forest dominated the fourth game throughout the first several points. Borhart led the Demon Deacon attack, serving seven straight points to extend the lead to 21-8 lead. Although the Red Storm attempted a late game run, Wake Forest would not let up, winning 30-15. In the championships match earlier in the day, Florida beat Towson, 3-2. Florida senior Sherri Williams was named tournament MVP, while Jane Collymore was named All-Tournament. 2004 St. John's Classic All-Tournament Team
