Queens, NY - The St. John's women's volleyball team opened the 2004 Hawk Challenge Tournament with a four-game win over UNC-Asheville, but dropped the nightcap to LIU in five games on Friday night in Princess Anne, MD. The Red Storm extended a season-long win streak to six with the win in the opener, but fell to 11-5 in the loss to the Blackbirds. In the opening match, St. John's lost the first game to Asheville, 30-28, but cruised to the win by capturing the next three games, 30-25, 30-24 and 30-23. Junior Jackie Ahlers led the Red Storm with 28 kills, while senior Yana Ruban added 14 and freshman Lisa Tedder tallied 50 assists and 14 digs. The nightcap pitted St. John's against local rival Long Island University. The Red Storm won the first game in convincing fashion, 30-20, and took a two-game lead with a 31-29 decision in the second. The Blackbirds, however, won the next three games, 30-25, 30-27 and 15-12, respectively, to take the win. Ahlers had 35 kills and a .448 hitting percentage, while Tedder added 64 assists and 18 digs. St. John's closes out play in the Hawk Challenge on Saturday, playing host Maryland-Eastern Shore at 1 p.m., and then meet Delaware State at 5 p.m.
