2003: As a junior, Ruban finished fourth on the team in kills, totaling 242 (2.26 kills/g). One of St. John's major defensive forces at the net, Ruban led the team in total blocks with 109, including 20 block solos and 89 block assists. Ruban posted a career-high 15 kills against Rutgers on Nov. 2. She recorded 12 double-figure kill efforts this season, including her last four matches. Ruban set a career-high with five assists vs. Marist on Sept. 26. In the summer of 2004, Ruban, along with teammate Jackie Ahlers and coach Persico-Smith, won the gold medal at the Empire State games for the New York City team.

2002: In her first season at St. John's, Ruban provided the Red Storm with a defensive force in the middle. She led the team in total blocks with 103, including 20 block solos and 83 block assists. In addition, she ranked fourth in kills with 187 and tied for second in service aces with 32. Ruban's best game of the season came in a non-conference contest against Columbia, where she posted a double-double with 10 kills and a career-high 12 total blocks, including nine block solos. Later in the season, Ruban set a career-high with 11 kills versus Rutgers. For the second consecutive summer, she took home a silver medal from the Empire State Games, while participating for the New York City team.

Before St. John's: Ruban transferred to St. John's after spending last year at the Ukrainian Agricultural University in Kiev, Ukraine. Prior to her time at the Agricultural University, Yana attended the Ukrainian Sport-Boarding-Lyceum, where she served as team captain for two years.
