JAMAICA, N.Y. This weekend, the St. Johns University mens and womens track and field team participated in the Manhattan College Pentathlon Invitational. The field consisted of St. Johns, Rutgers University, and the host school, Manhattan. In this six-event invitational, Red Storm competitors won two events, while finishing in second or third three times each.
In the mens Pentathlon, Manhattan Colleges Rajne Svenssohn took first place with a total of 3760 points. Senior George Maringapasi (KewKew Zimbabwe/Prince Edward School) took second place with 3,598 points. Junior Dietrech Washington (Nashua, N.H./ Nashua High School) compiled 2,444 points for sixth place. On the womens side, Angela Messerschmidt of Rutgers University totaled 2907 points taking first place. The top St. Johns finisher was junior Mika Rose (Westbury, N.Y./Holy Trinity) with 2,813 points placing her in third. Sophomore Alina Abramova (Armavik, Russia/Municipal Gymnasia) finished in fourth place right behind Rose with 2,797 points. Both the men and the women posted solid distances in the shot put. The womens team was lead by the first place finish of senior Sheba George (Brooklyn, N.Y./Samuel J. Tilden) who posted a length of 15.05 meters. Freshman Brandy Bradford (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Lawrence High School) finished third with a distance of 11.52 meters. The mens team posted second and third place finishes falling short of Rutgers Mike Pellet who finished first with a distance of 15.50 meters. Freshman James Riley (Long Island, N.Y./Longwood High School) took second with a length of 14.63 meters, as junior Terrence Buckley (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Winding River) finished right behind him with 14.42 meters.
In the womens weight throw competition, George took first place again with a distance of 18.66 meters. Bradford continued her successful day with a distance of 13.55 meters placing her in second. On the mens side, Jacob Freeman of Manhattan College captured first place with a distance of 20.98 meters. The top St. Johns finisher was Buckley who finished in fourth at 15.11 meters. Classmate Ed Hausdorf (Bellerose, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy High School) came in sixth with a length of 14.73 meters.
