St. John's Track and Field Excels at the 2003 SJU Classic

Jamaica, N.Y.  St. Johns hosted the 2003 SJU Collegiate Classic this afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field in Jamaica, N.Y. Participants came from all over the New York Metro area to combine for a memorable final home meet of the season.

Junior distance runner Sean Tremblay (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) finished first in the steeplechase with a time of 9:53.56. In the field events, senior shot putter Dietrech Washington (Nashua, N.H.) paced the Red Storm, with a toss of 14.04 meters to earn top honors.

In the mens 400 meter, St. Johns swept the top two spots as junior Dewayne Barrett (Brooklyn N.Y.) ran a speedy 47.53, followed closely by junior Mohamed Kanu (Mt., Laurel, N.J.) with a 48.33. Junior Andy Mitchell (Bronx, N.Y.) finished second overall in the mens 800 meter with a time of 1:51.58. The Red Storms Mens 4x400 relay team closed out the day with a first place finish, clocking a time of 3:16.75 to outpace the field.

On the womens side, Shernette Hyatt-Davis (West Hempstead, N.Y.) had a career day for the Red Storm, placing second overall in the womens 100, 200 and 400 meter events, with times of 11.93, 23.88 and 54.47, respectively. In addition, she played a major role in the womens 4x100 (46.78) relay teams first place finish. The womens 4x400 relay team added a first place finish, posting a time of 3:48.95.

The Red Storm track and field teams returns to action on the weekend of May 16-18 at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J.
