Red Storm Men and Women Conclude Competition at BIG EAST Championships

Jamaica, N.Y.- The St. Johns University mens and womens track and field teams competed at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs, Connecticut this past weekend. The Red Storm men placed 13th with 29 points, while the women finished 14th with 17 points. On the mens side, sophomore Ashwan Knight (Jamaica, N.Y.), and juniors Andy Mitchell (Bronx, N.Y.), Mohamed Kanu (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), and Dewayne Barrett (Brooklyn, N.Y.), captured first place in the mens 4x400 relay with a time of 3:10.45. Barrett added a fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.32, just .01 seconds behind the third place finisher. Graduate Student Jason Goulart (Providence, R.I.) placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 57.74 meters.On the womens side, senior Alina Abramova (Armavir, Russia) finished second in the triple jump soaring for 12.79 meters. Sophomores Blessing Egwu (Queens, N.Y.) and teammate Judy Owens (Brooklyn, N.Y.) captured sixth and seventh place respectively in the hammer throw. Egwu threw for 47.22 meters, while Owens connected for 45.34 meters.The Red Storm return to action again on Saturday, May 10th as they host the SJU Collegiate Classic at DaSilva Memorial Field on the Queens campus.
