George Crowned BIG EAST Champion in Discus

Piscataway, N.J. - Sheba George (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way for the St. John's University women's track & field team today the the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships being held at Rutgers University. George captured the discus championship with a 48.88m performance. George's mark was nearly 10 feet better than her nearest competitor. George also took fifth place in the shot put with a mark of 13.85m.

Renee Castelo (Santa Barbara, N.Y.) took 2nd place in the heptathlon during Friday's competition. Castelo scored a season-high 4935 points in the BIG EAST heptathlon. Castelo managed to capture second place in the overall competition by winning the 800m event with a time of 2:20.15.

Graduate student Michele Hickman took fourth place in the triple jump with a mark of 12.84. This was Hickman's first BIG EAST Championships. Also in the triple jump, Alina Abramova placed 10th with a 11.63m performance.

Tiehise Shell (Hollis, N.Y.) advanced to the finals in both the 100m and 200m races. Tiffany Barnes (Queens Village, N.Y.) ran well enough to advance to the finals of the 400m. Dinah Mensah (Bronx, N.Y.) qualified for the finals in the 800m. The finals of these events will take place during tomorrow's competition.

The Red Storm women currently hold fourth place with 26 pointsat the BIG EAST Championship. Rutgers leads the pack with 39 points and Notre Dame trails the Red Storm with 25 points. Competition resumes tomorrow at 11:00 am.
