St. Johns Track and Field Teams Earn 18 Top Three Finishes at Monday Meeting II

Jamaica, N.Y. - This afternoon the St. Johns mens and womens track and field teams hosted the Monday Meeting II at DaSilva Field, located on the Jamaica campus. The teams combined for an incredible 18 top three finishes throughout the days meet.

In the closest race of the afternoon, sophomores Ashawn Knight (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Chris Porsenna (Uniondale, N.Y.) finished just two tenths of a second behind one another in the 400m hurdles, as Knight placed first with a time of 1:01.0, followed by Porsenna with a time of 1:01.2. Porsenna tacked on another second place finish earlier in the day in the 110m hurdles, clocking a time of 17.2.

In the mens steeplechase, it was also a close race between junior Sean Tremblay (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and freshman Luis Garcia (Jamaica, N.Y.), with Tremblay over taking Garcia for the first place finish in a time of 9:46.3, while Garcia finished second at 10:09.1. Senior Pete Alfano (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned a second place finish in the 1500m, posting a time of 4:12.3.

In womens action, juniors Shernette Hyatt-Davis (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and Judy Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) took first and second, respectively, in the second section of the womens 100 meters. Hyatt-Davis clocked a time of 12.0 in the event and Williams was just behind her at 12.3. In the first section of the 100 meters, freshman Erin Willis (Chula Vista, Calif.) also had a fine race, posting a time of 12.0. In the long jump, Sophia Bazile (Nyack, N.Y.) finished second with a mark of 5.46m.

In the relay events, the men posted two first place finishes. In the 4x100 they clocked a time 42.6 and in the 4x800, they posted a time of 8:30.0. The women also faired well in the relays, placing second in the 4x400, finishing with a time of 4:06.6.

The St. Johns mens and womens track and field teams return to action on Thursday, April 24, when the open competition at the Penn Relays held in Philadelphia, Pa.
