Mens Track and Field Team Takes First Place at Met Championships

Jamaica, N.Y. - The St. Johns mens track and field team took first place at the Metropolitan Championships this afternoon, earning 115 points, edging out Columbia in the 15-team field. This is the 20th Met Championship that St. Johns has won in the last decade. The women also had a fine performance, finishing third overall with 116.5 points, behind Columbia and womens champion Rutgers.

Juniors Dewayne Barrett (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Mohammed Kanu (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) both finished in the top five in the 400 meters and the 200 meters. Barrett placed first in the 400 with a time of 46.46 and Kanu finished fourth with a time of 47.63. In the 200 meters, it was Kanu finishing second, clocking a time of 21.72 and Barrett placing third with a 21.76. Classmate Andy Mitchell (Bronx, N.Y.) also had a top five finish, placing second in the 800m, clocking a time of 1:53.17.

In the field events, senior Dietrech Washington (Nashua, N.H.) finished third in both the high jump, with a mark of 1.86m, and the shot put, with a toss of 14.69m. Finishing third in the long jump for the Red Storm was freshman Jamiel Hendrick (Great Neck, N.Y.), with a jump of 6.50m.

For the throwers, graduate student Jason Goulart (Providence, R.I.) earned a first place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 54.80m. Sophomore Josh Brown (Wallingford, Pa.) also finished in the top five, placing third in the javelin with a mark 51.20m.

The mens relay teams were unstoppable, finishing first in the 4x100 with a time of 42.53 and the 4x400 clocking a time of 3:12.43.

For the women, junior Shernette Hyatt- Davis (West Hempstead, N.Y.) led the way for St. Johns, finishing first in the 400m dash, clocking a time of 55.26 and placing second in the 200m with a time of 24.63.

The women dominated the hammer throw, having four of the top five finishers from St. Johns. Sophomore Blessing Egwu (Queens, N.Y.) placed first with a toss of 46.15m, while freshman Tetee Kuyateh (Providence, R.I.) placed third with a mark of 42.14m, Judy Owens (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished fourth at 42.00m and Brandy Bradford (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) came in fifth with a throw of 40.36m. Kuyateh also competed in and won the discus, with a toss of 36.29m.

Junior Alina Abramova (Armavir, Russia) had two top five finishes of her own, winning the triple jump with a mark of 12.35m and placing fourth in the long jump with a jump of 5.70m.

In the relays, the womens 4x400 team of Charline Sealy (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Tarashon Broomes (Fairlawn, N.J.), Kay-Dian Reid (Windsor, Conn.) and Hyatt-Davis, finished second, clocking a time of 3:48.97, while the team of Judy Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.), Denise Raab (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), Reid and Hyatt-Davis competed in the 4x100, placing third with a time of 50.25.

The St. John mens and womens track and field teams return to action on April 21, when they host the Monday Meeting II at DaSilva Field.
