Track and Field Wins Five Events at the Sam Howell Invitational

Princeton, N.J.- The St. Johns University track and field team took to the track at the Sam Howell Classic and earned five first place finishes this past weekend. The Red Storm were extremely strong in the jump events as they won three events and placed seven jumpers in the top-five.

The Red Storm were led on the womens side by junior Alina Ambrova (Armavik, Russia), who was able to win the triple jump with a distance of 3861/4. Axum Gaines earned the second victory for the women, when she covered a distance of 549M in the long jump. Ambrova and sophomore Sophie Sylvain (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) each added top-five finishes in the long jump. Junior Mika Rose (Westbury, NY.) earned a third place finish in the high jump with a leap of 52. In the throw events, freshman Brandy Bradford (Inwood, N.Y.) finished fourth in the hammer with a toss of 1474.

On the mens side, graduate student George Maringapasi (Harare, Zimbabwe) added another first place finish in the high jump with a height of 66. Junior Mariah Mauer (Kingston, N.Y.) finished in second place in the triple jump with a distance of 472 =. In the throw events, junior Ed Hausdorf (Bellrose, N.Y.) earned a first place finish in the javelin, while freshman Josh Brown (Wallingford, Pa.) finished fifth. In the mens discus, Terrence Buckley (Shoreham, NY.) earned a second place finish with a throw of 1453. On the track, the mens 4x100 relay team of Rob Gary (Philadelphia, Pa.), Damion Kenwood (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Mohamed Kanu (Mt. Laurel, NJ.), and Phil McLean (Bayshore N.Y.), took top honors with a time 41.88.

The St. Johns outdoor track and field season continues when the team travels to Miami on April 13 to compete in the Gatorade Invitational.
