JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Nicola Coffey was named ECAC Division I Field Performer of the Week for events through April 2, 2001. Coffey is the first St. Johns athlete to be honored this season.
Coffey (Meath, Ireland/Kells Community) received this honor for her performances at the Army Invitational last weekend. In the hammer throw, Coffey finished first with a mark of 1737 m. This mark earned Coffey to right to participate in both the ECAC and BIG EAST championships. Coffeys most recent hammer mark is not her personal best (18311), but still ranks among the top 10 performances all-time for an SJU student-athlete. In the shot put event, Coffey took home fifth place. A 396m feat qualified Coffey for the BIG EAST championships in the shot put. This mark also ranks Coffey among the best throwers all-time at St. Johns.
Coffey returned to collegiate competition this year after red-shirting for the 1999-2000 season. During her year out, Coffey, the Irish national record holder in the hammer, was training for the world championships.
Coffey, a native of Meath, Ireland, is currently pursuing a masters degree in business at the University. Coffey is the daughter of Gabriel and Sandra Coffey.
