Three First Place Finishes Lead St. Johns at LSU Tiger Relays

Jamaica, N.Y. - This weekend the St. Johns mens and womens track and field teams traveled to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge to compete in the LSU Tiger Relays. In one of their best meets of the outdoor season, the Red Storm had three first places finishes.

Junior Alina Abramova (Armavir, Russia) earned two of the first place finishes, one in the triple jump and one in the long jump. In the long jump, Abramova set a personal best with a jump of 6.03m that qualified her for the BIG EAST Championships, ECACs and NCAA Championships and in the triple jump she earned a score of 12.32m.

The other first place finish went to junior Dewayne Barrett (Brooklyn, N.Y.) whose time of 47.40 in the 400 meters was good enough to qualify him for the BIG EAST Championships and to beat an LSU 400 meter team who were NCAA Champions in the event last season. Barrett also qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 200 meters with a time of 21.78, finishing 10th in the event. Also junior Mohammed Kanu (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) earned a fourth place finish in the 400 meters clocking a time of 48.54.

For the women, sophomore Charlene Sealy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.46. Shernette Hyatt-Davis earned two top 10 finishes, a third place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 25.28 and a seventh place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 58.73. Also earning a top five finish in the 400 meters was freshman Kay-Dian Reid (Windsor, Conn.) who clocked a time of 57.56 to place her fourth in the event.

In the throwing events, graduate student Jason Goulart (Providence, R.I.) placed second the hammer throw with a toss of 18411 that qualified him for the BIG EAST Championships.

The St. Johns mens and womens track and field teams return to action on Monday, March 31, when they host the Monday Meeting I at DaSilva Field beginning at 4:30 p.m.
