Columbia, S.C.- National track & field power house South Carolina played host to the Weems Baskin Relays this weekend, but it was the Red Storm that blew out of Columbia, S.C. with eight event winners.
St. Johns victory run began Friday evening as senior Sheba George (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the collegiate hammer with a toss of 55.00m 1805. Junior thrower Ed Hausdorf (Bellerose, N.Y.) hurled his way to winning the javelin with a mark of 59.17 1941. St. Johns was also strong in the jump events as senior Mariah Mauer (Kingston, N.Y.) took first in the triple jump with a leap of 14.79 486 <. SJU jumps coach Michelle Hickman, an NCAA All-American, won the womans triple jump in 12.41 m 408 >. On the track, the mens 4 x 1200m team of Mark Croswell (Elmont, N.Y.), Andy Mitchell (Bronx, N.Y.), Greg Mason (Staten Island, N.Y), and Sean Tremblay (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) took first, clocking a time of 12:59.36. Fridays victory assault concluded when Mohammed Kanu (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), Damion Kenwood (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Ben Catalano (Carle Place, N.Y.), and Germaine Johnson (Deer Park, N.Y.) won the mens 4 x 300m in a time of 2:18.3. On Saturday, the Red Storm closed out the weekend with two more victories. Graduate Student George Maringapasi (Harare, Zimbabwe) won the high jump in 2.01m 67 and Tremblay added another win by taking the 3,000m Steeple Chase in 9:59.03. I was impressed with our teams efforts and pleased with the high number of wins coming in our opening meet, stated Head Coach Jim Hurt. We feel we have strong teams in all event areas and the victories this weekend verifies those feelings. We know it is always difficult to travel south this time of year and face strong national powers like South Carolina. But our athletes did an excellent job the entire weekend and we look forward to building upon those efforts in the weeks ahead.
