JAMAICA, N.Y.- This weekend, the St. Johns mens and womens track and field teams competed in the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y. The womens team led the way with five first place crowns and ten top-three finishes in 14 events. The mens team compiled three first places and nine top three finishes.
The womens team was led by senior Sheba George (Brooklyn, N.Y./Samuel J. Tilden) who posted two first place finishes in the weight throw and shot put events. George posted a distance of 19.06 meters in the weight throw and 13.91 meters in the shot put. Sophomore Alina Abramova (Armavik, Russia/Municipal Gymnasia) had a successful meet with a first place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 11.54 meters and second in the long jump with a length of 5.28 meters. Sophomore Sophie Sylvain (New Rochelle, N.Y./Mount Vernon High School) placed right behind her classmate in the long jump at 5.15 meters. Junior Mika Rose (Westbury, N.Y./Holy Trinity) continued the success of the womens team with a first place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters. Junior Charlene Sealy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Clara Barton H.S.) had the final first place finish for the Red Storm women as she won the 800m event with a time of 2:22.9. Sophomore Judy Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz H.S.) successfully compiled two second place finishes in the 200m and 55m events.
For the mens team, senior George Maringapasi (KewKew Zimbabwe/Prince Edward School) led the way with a first place finish in the long jump with a length of 6.88 meters and a third place in the high jump with a height of 1.98 meters. Junior Mariah Mauer (Cold Springs, N.Y./Chicago State University) placed first in the triple jump posting a distance of 14.66 meters. The Red Storms other first place finish came from junior Phil McLean (Bayshore, N.Y./Bay Shore High School) in the 400m event as he posted a time of 50.0. The men also got a strong performance from sophomore Mohammed Kanu (High Point, N.C./Lenape High School) who finished second in the 200m with a time of 22.8 and third in the 500m with a time of 1:06.2.
The Red Storms next meet will be the SJU-Fordham Invite on Friday, January 18th at the 169th Armory.
