St. John's Track & Field Storms Off With Five Top Times At Fordham Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm Track & Field team fared well over the weekend, finishing first in five events and marking twenty-five top five scores at the Fordham Opener at Vincent T. Lombardi Center Fieldhouse in Bronx, N.Y. on Dec. 7.

Senior Dominique Eason, junior Phobay Kutu-Akoi, sophomores Fayanne Francis and Asia Davy and freshman Priscilla Frederick topped the competition in their respective events at the invite.

Eason finished first in the weight throw with a long-distance toss of 15.55 meters.

In the jumping events, Francis and Frederick were champions in the long jump and high jump with distances of 5.47 meters and 1.73 meters, respectively.

In her first meet of her collegiate career, Frederick, a freshman from Sicklerville, N.J., also marked a second place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 10.76 meters. Junior Marie Griffiths finished third behind Frederick with a distance of 10.45 meters.

Junior Venisa Clark-Lee followed Francis' lead with a second place score in the high jump. Clarke-Lee finished .10 meters behind Francis with a jump of 1.63 meters.

Kutu-Akoi and newcomer Kate Dulmovits finished first and second respectively in the 400-meter dash, keeping the Red Storm tradition of middle-sprinters alive. Kutu-Akoi came in at 59.5 seconds, while Dulmovits finished four tenths of a second behind her at 59.9.

 

 

Sophomore Davy also held up the pride of the Red Storm middle-sprinters as she led the pack in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:18.5.

Junior-transfer Tyneka Greene also had a solid day of successes as she finished second in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:10.3 and third in the mile run at 5:16.7. Greene was the Red Storm's top cross country finisher in 2007.

St. John's is off for the rest of the month as the team trains for its next meet, the Yale Invitational on Jan. 12, 2008. The meet will take place at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
