St. John's Track & Field Races To A Metropolitan Championship Title

    QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's track & field team won the 2008 Metropolitan Championships hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Overpeck Sports Complex in Rutherford, N.J. this weekend.

    The team tallied 158 points with four individual champions and two runner-up finishes. Fordham came in second with 144 points.

    All three relay teams placed in the top three and earned 28 points as the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter squads each earned a Metropolitan title and the 4x800-meter team finished second behind Fordham. The 4x400-meter team qualified for ECAC competition with its first place time of 47.73.

    Freshman Priscilla Frederick earned the Metropolitan title in the high jump with an ECAC qualifying distance of 1.70 meters which earned 10 points for the Red Storm. Frederick also competed in the shot put, finishing sixth with a distance of 10.69 meters and three points and fifth in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles for four points and a time of 15.42 seconds. Sophomore Brianna Drexler finished eighth behind Frederick in the hurdles to earn one point.

    Sophomore Asia Davy raced to her Metropolitan title in the 400-meter hurdles with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 1:03.79. Freshman Vanessa Thompson also earned five points for St. John's with a fourth place time of 1:05.29.

    Junior Phobay Kutu-Akoi tallied 16 points as the runner-up in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Kutu-Akoi finished the 100-meter dash with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 12.24 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, the junior finished .06 seconds behind champion Symone Wong of Southern Connecticut State with a time of 25.36. Wong also finished first in the 100-meter dash by .04 seconds. Freshmen Rene Cousins and Kate Dulmovits came in fifth and seventh, respectively behind Kutu-Akoi to tally six additional points.

    In the 400-meter dash, freshmen Cousins and Lauren Wynter combined for seven points finishing fifth and sixth with time of 58.48 and 58.78, respectively.

    In throwing events, freshman Rachel Williams registered 19 points with third place finishes in the javelin throw (31.77 meters) and the shot put (11.45 meters), a fourth place finish in the discus 35.31 meters) and a seventh place finish in the hammer (37.97 meters). Senior Dominique Eason scored 10 points with a fourth place distance in the hammer throw(42.92 meters), a sixth place hurl in the discus (30.81 meters) and a seventh place finish in the shot put (10.37 meters).

    The 800-meter runners, Pam Petruski, Kim Piard and Shakira Best recorded 12 points, finishing third, fifth and seventh, respectively. Freshman Ashlee Payne also competed, but just missed earning a point with a ninth place time of 2:21.40.

    In other distance events, junior Tyneka Greene and freshman Sarah Sudbury tallied six points in the 1,500-meter run with times of 4:52.52 and 4:58.36, respectively.

    Sophomore Sarah Fry competed in the 10,000-meter run to earn three points with a time of 48:18.79 and freshman Lori Dougherty scored two points in the 5,000-meter run with a seventh place time of 20:00.84.

    Junior Marie Griffiths and freshman Bintou Dibba finished back to back in the triple jump event with distances of 10.50 meters and 10.36 meters, respectively, good for fifth and sixth place and a combined seven points. The duo earned another nine points in the triple jump as Dibba placed third with a distance of 5.29 meters and Griffiths finished sixth with a jump of 4.98 meters.

    The Red Storm track & field team will be back in action this weekend at the annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. The relays start on Thursday, April 24.
