Jamaica, N.Y. The St. Johns womens tennis team defeated Long Island University, 4-3 to improve its record to 1-1 in the fall season. The Red Storm lost their first match of the season to Fordham.
The Red Storm were unable to capture any of the doubles matches and headed into singles play trailing 1-0. At No. 1 singles, Corina Cetateanu dropped the first set 1-6, but rebounded to take the next two sets. Cetateanu defeated Almeyda, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. St. Johns also took No. 2 singles with Nataliya Kostova downing Berenbaum, 7-5, 6-0. Tessa Lewis, in the No. 3 singles position, was unable to put Herrera away, dropping the match, 3-6, 3-6. At No. 4 singles, Vera Efstathiou was defeated 2-6 by Apostu-Efremou in the first set and was forced to retired in the second. The Long Island Panthers led 3-2. Jennifer Liantonio topped Sinclair, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 6 singles spot. Liantonios win tied the match at 3-all. At No. 5, Carolina Miccolis lost the first set 6-7 (0) to Andlin, before taking the next two, 6-4, 6-2.
The Red Storm return to action Friday, October 12 versus Old Westbury at 4:00pm.
