St. Johns Men Drop to Army, Women Lose to Providence

JAMAICA, N.Y.- The St. Johns University mens and womens tennis teams were in action on Friday as the men traveled to West Point to take on Army and the women were in Rhode Island to take on Providence. The men lost to Army, 7-0 while the Friars defeated the women, 4-3. For the men, the first doubles team of senior Fabian Carchi (Corona, NY/Cardozo High School) and sophomore Rick Ferreira (Fort Beaufort, South Africa/Northern Iowa) were the only two St. Johns players to gain a victory against Army on Friday. Carchi and Ferreira defeated the Albornoz brothers of Army, 8-4.For the women, sophomore Nataliya Kostova (Bulgaria/Bethune-Cookman College) played a remarkable match, as she defeated Providences Brooke Rubin, 6-4, 6-4. Kostova kept Rubin, a senior, one win away from breaking a Providence record for most wins in a season. At the 3 spot, St. Johns senior Vera Efstathiou (Whitestone, NY/Cardozo High School) defeated the Friars Erin Haley, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. The doubles team of freshman Jennifer Liantonio (West Hempstead, N.Y./H. Frank Carey HS) and senior Carolina Miccolis (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colesio Unico) were able to beat out the Providence doubles team of Erin Haley and Katie Lafayette, 8-5.In other tennis news, neither the mens nor the womens teams were able to qualify for the BIG EAST Championships. The women will return to action on April 17th, as they will travel to Manhattan to take on the Jaspers in a match set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
