Albany, N.Y.- The St. Johns womens tennis team (4-7 overall) swept a pair of matches this weekend in Albany. The Red Storm defeated Albany 5-1 on Friday and came back on Saturday and defeated Holy Cross 6-1.
Against Albany, the Red Storm were led by Nataliya Kostova (Bulgaria) who earned a victory at the No. 1 singles spot by defeating Violeta Petijevi, 6-0, 6-1. Kostova then teamed up with freshman Tessa Lewis (Halifax, Canada) to win the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-6. In other singles matches senior Corina Cetateanu (Forest Hills, N.Y.) earned a victory over Alex Berley 6-0,6-2 at the No.3 spot. Junior Carolina Miccolis (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and freshman Jennifer Liantonio (West Hempstead, N.Y.) each earned a singles victory at the No.5 and 6 spot respectively. The pair would then team up to earn a victory at the No. 3 doubles spot. Sophomore Olga Romanidis (Kew Gardens, N.Y.) and Cetateanu would team up to give St. Johns the sweep in the doubles matches when won at the No. 2 spot, 8-0. On Saturday against Holy Cross, the Red Storm were able to earn victories in five of six singles matches. Kostova was again strong in the No. 1 spot defeating Amy Crump 6-2,6-3. Lewis, playing at the No. 2 spot, earned a convincing victory 6-1, 6-1 over Missy Crump. Romanidis, playing at the No. 4 spot, was able earn a victory when she won her match over Erica Ragelsurg in a third set super tiebreaker, 14-12. Cetateanu and Liantonio both won in straight sets to earn points for the Red storm. In doubles, the pair of Cetateanu and Romanidis won at the No.2 spot, 8-4, while the team of Liantonio and Miccolis won a tight match at the No. 3 spot, 8-6. The Red Storm look to keep their winning streak alive when they visit UMass on Tuesday, April 9.
