March 26, 2004 Worcester, Mass. - The St. John's women's tennis team, who are tied for 72nd in the ITA rankings, increased their winning streak to four-straight matches as they swept the Holy Cross Crusaders 7-0 this afternoon in Worcester, Mass. The Red Storm did not lose a single set on the afternoon, as they improved to 9-2 overall. Lauren Leo (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Hande Gorur (Istanbul, Turkey) teamed up in the first doubles spot and swept their opponents 8-0. Allison Davidson (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Lauren Lorenzetti's (Northfield, N.J.) win at the #2 spot earned the doubles point for the Red Storm, before Kristina Bothova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Jennifer Liantonio (West Hempstead, N.Y.) added an 8-1 victory in the third doubles spot. Gorur keyed the singles run for the Red Storm, earning a 6-1, 6-4 win in the #1 spot and was followed by a 6-3, 6-1 win from Bothova and a 6-4, 6-1 take by Davidson for the match. Leo (6-0, 6-3), Liantonio (6-1, 6-1) and Lorenzetti (6-0, 6-0) each won in straight sets to complete the 7-0 shutout for St. John's, the team's second of the season.
The Red Storm will look to continue their winning streak and improve on their 3-1 BIG EAST record when they host Villanova on Wednesday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
