Jersey City, N.J. - At St. Peter's College Dual Match Classic last weekend, the St. John's women's tennis team compiled at 1-1 record. On Friday, Febraury 23, the women defeated St. Peter's, 4-3. Then on Saturday, the Red Storm dropped a 7-0 decision to Long Island University. The women's spring record stands at 2-2. By beating St. Peter's, the women have matched their win total from last season. In 1999-2000, the Red Storm women managed just two wins, both in the spring season. The team is continuing to improve and they could be fighting for a BIG EAST tournament berth.

In the match against St. Peter's four of six singles players captured wins. The No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, Vera Estafihuou (Whitestone, N.Y./Cardozo HS) and Corina Cetateanu (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills HS) both managed wins, to even their spring records at 2-2. Olga Romanidis (Kew Gardens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Carolina Miccolis (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colesio Unico), at the No. 4 and 5 spots, easily won their matches.

Long Island University was a little tougher for the Red Storm women. At No. 2 singles, Cetateanu rebounded to win the second set, 6-0. However, rather than play a third set the match went to a tiebreaker, which Cetateneau dropped, 7-1. The only match the Red Storm won was at the No. 1 doubles spots. Efstathiou and Cetateneau managed an 8-3 victory over the team from LIU.

The Red Storm return to action on Saturday, March 17 when they travel to Georgetown to take on the Hoyas in thier first BIG EAST match.
