SJU Womens Tennis Defeats Iona, 7-0

Jamaica, N.Y.-The St. Johns womens tennis team beat Iona, 7-0, Thursday afternoon. Every SJU player had a great game and played hard.

At first doubles, sophomore Nataliya Kostova (Bulgaria) and freshman Tessa Lewis(Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada) beat Ionas Conklin and Brown, 8-2. While in second doubles, senior Corina Cetateanu (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and senior Vera Efstathiou (Whitestone, N.Y.) were victorious against Leabo and Muldoon, 8-2. In third doubles, freshman Jennifer Liantonio (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and sophomore Olga Romanidis (Kew Gardens, N.Y.) didnt lose a game to Fitzmaurice and Purcell, 8-0.

At No. 1 singles, Kostova won a great match against Tobe Conkin, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Lewis defeated Ionas Heather Brown, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Efstathiou successfully beat Sue Leabo, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Cetateano crushed Erin Muldoon, 6-0, 6-0. At. No. 5 singles, senior Carolina Miccolis (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) triumphed over Liz Fitzmaurice, 6-0, 6-0. At. No. 6 singles, Liantonio prevailed over Maureen Purcell, 6-0, 6-0.

St. Johns next match is against Syracuse March 1, 2002 at 2:00pm in the Alley Pond Tennis Complex.
