Washington D.C. - The St. John's women's tennis opened up BIG EAST Conference play with a 4-3 victory over BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh in a match played in Washington, D.C. The victory improves the Red Storm to 2-0 on the season.
In doubles play, the team of Tessa Woodruff (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada) and Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.) earned a victory at the No. 2 spot. Kristina Bothova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Nataliya Kostova (Sophia, Bulgaria) closed out the doubles competition with a victory at the No. 1 spot to secure the all important doubles point for the Red Storm.
In the singles matches, Bothova earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Pittsburghs Borza, while Lorenzetti defeated Hughes 7-5, 6-2 to put St. Johns one point away from a victory. With the match tied 3-3, Woodruff, up a set, battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to clinch the match for the Red Storm by a score of 6-4, 7-5.
The Red Storm returns to action on March 8, when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to take on the Princeton Tigers.
