St. Johns Womens Tennis Drops BIG EAST Opener to Rutgers, 7-0

Piscataway, N.J. - The St. Johns University womens tennis team opened the BIG EAST season with a 7-0 loss at Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Storm was unable to win a singles or doubles match.

In the closest match of the day, Corina Cetateanu (Forest Hills, N.Y./ Forest Hills HS), playing No. 1 singles, was defeated by Carissa Sommerlad, 6-0, 7-6 (5). In the second set, Cetateanu was down 4-1 before staging a comeback. Cetateanu rebounded to tie the match at 4-4 before eventually falling.

No. 2 singles player Vera Efstathiou (Whitestone, N.Y./Cardozo HS) fell to Jennifer Hellier, 6-1, 6-3.

The only doubles team to win any games was Cetateanu and Efstathious, who eventually lost to Shaugnessy and Travlos, 8-5.

St. Johns record drops to 0-5 and 0-1 in the conference. The Red Storm hopes to win its first non-conference match when they host Adelphi at the Bronx International Youth Tennis Center.
