TAMPA, Fla. - The St. John's women's tennis team was victorious over No. 6 seed Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at the BIG EAST Championship, defeating the Orange, 4-2, at the P.E. Courts on the campus of the University of South Florida. The doubles point was the key to victory for the Red Storm (11-11), as it opened up with victories in the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. The pairing of Alison Adamski and Emily Barnett got things going for STJ as they defeated Simone Kalhorn and Jacquelynn Tang, 8-1. At the No. 2 position, Ira Aleksova and Maria Zivcicova prevailed in a close contest over Ashley Spicer and Chelsea Jones, 8-6, for the win. In singles play, St. John's and Syracuse split their matchups. The Red Storm got wins at the No. 1, 2 and 6 positions. Zivcicova opened competition with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Christina Tan, and Adamski followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Kalhorn at the No. 2 spot. STJ's Jenny Yonkus rounded out the Red Storm victories with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tang. On Sunday, No. 7 seed STJ will face No. 4 seed Marquette at 9 a.m. at the Andros Dorm Courts.
