QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team extended its winning streak to seven matches after defeating local rival Queens College, 5-2, on a glorious Monday afternoon at the Courts at St. John's. The tilt was the final match of the regular season for the Red Storm, as the team improved to 10-10 on the season, while the Lady Knights fell to 0-5. St. John's played its full roster in advance of the BIG EAST Championships, and the great team effort led to the win. The Red Storm swept the doubles play to take an early 1-0 lead. Seniors Mariana Chachua/Ashley Harper paired up to shutout Queens College's duo at the No. 3 doubles spot, while the pairs of grad student Alison Adamski/freshman Emily Barnett and sophomore Ira Aleksova/Jenny Yonkus both picked up 8-2 wins over their opponents at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. The Red Storm forfeited at the No. 6 spot as the squad only played five singles positions to rest some players before the weekend. Senior Maria Zivcicova won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot and junior Gabija Gasiunaite defeated her opponent at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1. Harper and Yonkus kept the momentum from their big doubles wins and applied it to their matches at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively: both shutout their counterparts, 6-0, 6-0. St. John's will now travel to the BIG EAST Championships in Tampa, Fla. The Red Storm earned a seventh-seed and will take on tenth-seeded West Virginia in the opening round on Thursday at 9 a.m. on the Varsity Courts on the campus of the University of South Florida.
