St. John's Softball Sweeps Pittsburgh on Senior Day
 

 
St. John's (26-24, 8-8) was lifted by sophomore Lisa Tropea to end their BIG EAST season with two wins against the University of Pittsburgh (19-26, 3-11) at Mitchel Field. The Red Storm defeated the Panthers 8-2 and 3-2 (10 innings).In the first game, the Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Red Storm answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Lisa Tropea led-off the game with a walk and advance to second on a base hit by freshman Alesha Argeras. Sophomore Tiffany Howerton reached base on an error by second baseman Clare McCann, scoring Tropea. Two batters later, sophomore Marilyn Brown hit a double to left center to score Argeras and Howerton. In the fifth inning, junior Danielle Sweeney hit a single to left center to score two runs and put the game out of reach. The Red Storm collected 11 hits and committed no errors. Junior Gina Calabrese struck out seven to finish her season with a 18-11 record. In the night cap, the Red Storm defeated the Panthers 3-2 in 10 innings. Again Pittsburgh set the tone, taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Ann Raab tied the game at two with a solo homerun to right center field in the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the 10th with runners on first and second, Lisa Tropea (4-for-8 on the day) hit a single to left field to score a Susan D'Ambrosio and end the game in dramatic fashion. Freshman south paw Courtney Fitzgerald hurled her 13th complete game of the season, striking out seven to complete her rookie season with a 8-11 record.
