Softball Swept By Boston College in BIG EAST Doubleheader
 

 
Jamaica, N.Y. - The St. Johns softball team fell in a BIG EAST doubleheader to Boston College, 8-0, and 5-3, this afternoon at Red Storm Field. The losses drop St. Johns record to 29-27 overall, and 8-10 in the BIG EAST, while the Eagles improve to 31-17, 13-4.

In game one, Boston College took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back homeruns by Lisa Fisher and Erin Mackey.

In the second, the Eagles added another run on a homer by Sara Kellner.

Senior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) broke up Kim Ryans four innings of perfect work with a single up the middle with one out in the fourth inning. Senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) walked to put runners on first and second for the Red Storm, but they were unable to capitalize.

Freshman Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) led off the fifth with a single to centerfield, but was left stranded.

Sophomore Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) started game one for the Red Storm, working four innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits. Allman (7-5) walked four and struck out one. Freshman Melanie Lehman (Placerville, Calif.) came on in relief, going three innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, Boston College jumped out to an early lead on a second inning solo homerun by Mackey, her second of the day, to give the Eagles the 1-0 advantage. Two batters later, after a walk issuing a walk to Lisa Field, Elyse Meredith ripped a two-run homerun over the left field wall to increase the Eagles lead to three runs.

St. Johns answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Argeras led off the inning with a single, followed By Sainz earning a walk to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) then hit an RBI double to the left field gap to score Argeras from second to score the Red Storms first run of the game to pull within two runs of the Eagles at 3-1.

In the bottom of the fifth for Boston College, they were able to plate two more runs. An RBI single by Jennifer Asbury drove in Kristin Allain from third for the fourth run of the game for the Eagles. They struck again just two batters later when Fischers sacrifice fly scored Michelle Daly to widen the their lead to four runs at 5-1.

St. Johns attempt at a comeback but fell short, as they were only able to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Jessica Cameron (Girard, Ohio) got the inning started with a single to the right side. Then freshman Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) sent a double down the left field line, scoring Cameron to bring the Red Storm within three runs. Shepherd then responded with a double of her own to right centerfield, scoring Oliver from second to bring the score to 5-3, but then a pop-up to the second baseman and a strikeout ended the rally for St. Johns.

Allman (7-6) got the start in the circle for the second game, but lasted only 1 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on three hits, with two walks before being relieved by Lehman. Lehman pitched the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits with three walks.

The St. Johns softball team returns to action on Sunday, May 4, when they host BIG EAST conference rival UConn in the last regular season home game of the season. The game also marks the final home games in the careers of Alesha Argeras, Jessica Shepherd and Jessica Cameron. First pitch is slated for noon.
