Uniondale, NY - On April 24, St. John's fell to Seton Hall 3-2, in 21 innings, the longest conference game in BIG EAST History. The game lasted a remarkable five hours and 30 minutes as neither team took advantage of multiple opportunities. The Pirates left 23 runners on base, while the Red Storm stranded 16 runners. Freshman Courtney Fitzgerald went the distance for St. John's, setting a BIG EAST single-game innings pitched record. Liz Stanton, a former player at St. John's, held the old mark of 13.1 innings pitched in 1996. Three Seton Hall players had 10 at bats apiece, setting a conference record. The Pirates set a single-game at bats record with 81, while the teams combined for a league high 151 at bats.
In that unforgettable game, Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, as both Kim Jackson and Vickie Lamb singled with two outs. When Lamb stole second, Jackson scampered home for the go ahead run. St. John's answered with a run in the fifth inning. With one out, Cecelia Baston singled to leftfield, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Fisher. Lisa Tropea singled with two outs, plating Baston. The game remained tied at 1-1, until the 10th inning. Ranae Bart led off the inning with a single. She advanced to second on a throwing error by Tropea and made it to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Amy Lynn Mellin hit a single, which scored Bart. The Red Storm didn't want the game to end as the tied it in their half of the 10th inning. With one out, Alesha Argeras singled. Tiffany Howerton grounded to second, but Argeras beat the throw to second base. Like Howerton, Ann Raab reached on a fielder's choice, when Melissa Kern playing second threw the ball into left field. Argeras rounded the bases and scored for St. John's, tying the game at two. Seton Hall scored it's final run, the game winner in the 21st inning. Seton Hall's Jackson led off the inning, reaching on an error by the rightfielder. Two batters later, Marlena Kotynski also reached on an error by the rightfielder; advancing Jackson to third. Jackson would later score on a passed ball. St. John's went quietly in its half of the inning, falling by a score of 3-2.
St. John's dropped the first game by a score of 3-7. Tropea led off the game with her second home run of the season. SHU's Beaver (12-6) settled down after allowing a run in each of the first three innings. Jackson led the Pirates with two home runs and three RBI. Gina Calabrese recorded seven strike outs for St. John's as her record fell to 16-10
