Jamaica, N.Y. - Following a three-hour rain delay, the St. John's softball team dropped two conference games to Rutgers at Red Storm Field this evening. Rutgers took a 3-0 win in the first game behind a one-hit shutout from Leah Black. In game two, the Scarlet Knights used a five-run seventh inning to top the Red Storm, 5-1.
In game one, Black did not allow a hit until the top of the seventh inning when senior Ann Raab (Freehold, N.J.) doubled to right center field. Black finished the game allowing just one hit while striking out 10. Rutgers scored three runs on two hits and two Red Storm errors in the top of the third inning. With one out, the Red Storm committed back to back errors, allowing runners to reach second and third. Brittney Neer then singled down the left field line to drive in Dana Komar. Jenny Card drove the final two runs with a single to left center. For St. John's freshman Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) allowed three unearned runs on four hits and struck out six. In game two, the Red Storm took at 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when with two out senior Cecelia Baston (Falmouth, Maine) singled to right center. Junior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) then reached on an error by the third baseman and Baston was able to score on a throw by the right fielder. The Red Storm held the 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh inning. The Scarlet Knights scored five runs on six hits and one Red Storm error to win the game. Black took the win for Rutgers (17-19, 7-5) giving up just one hit and one unearned run in 4.2 innings of work. For St. John's, Allman went the distance again allowing three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five.
The Red Storm (20-25-1, 5-9) return to action tomorrow at noon versus Villanova.
