Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Led by two shut outs from freshman Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) and two two-run home runs from senior Kelly Houghton (Millsboro, Del.), the St. John's softball team swept Marist College, 3-0 and 8-0 earlier today at the Gartland Commons Athletic Fields.
In the first game, Red Storm Allman (18-20) threw her third no-hitter of the season, allowing only five Red Fox base runners in the game. The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) singled home Houghton to give St. John's a 1-0 advantage. Houghton then hit a two run homer off freshman pitcher Nichole Rawson (5-5) to give the Red Storm a 3-0 advantage in the seventh inning. Game two saw more of the same from Allman, as she allowed only a fourth inning single to junior Kathleen McEvily. The Red Storm scored twice in the fourth and then added six more runs, four earned in the fifth to earn an 8-0 victory in five innings. Houghton went 3-3 with another homerun (her third in three games) and three RBI's for St. John's. Freshman pitcher Danielle Blake (2-8) was on the losing end for Marist. With the two wins St. John's improves to 19-23-1 and 5-7 in the Big East, while Marist falls to 8-19-1 and 2-4 in the MAAC.
The Red Storm return to action on Thursday, April 18 when they host Hofstra University. The time of the game has been rescheduled to 4:30pm and will now include only a single game at Red Storm Field.
