Red Storm Take Two from Friars

Providence, R.I. - The St. John's University softball team swept Providence College this afternoon at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. The Red Storm took the first game 2-0 in eight innings and the second 8-2, to improve to 16-21-1 on the season and 5-5 in the BIG EAST. After seven scoreless innings of play, the Red Storm broke the 0-0 tie in top of the eighth inning. Freshman Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Senior Tiffany Howerton (Escondido, Calif.) followed with a single up the middle, advancing Sandoval to third. Senior Ann Raab (Freehold, N.J.) drove in the Red Storm's first run with a double over the centerfielder's head. Howerton would score the Red Storm's insurance run on a botched pickoff play by the Friars.

In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) would send the Friars down 1-2-3 for her ninth shut out of the year. Allman gave up eight hits and struck out three in eight complete innings. For Providence, Missy Petersen went the distance, allowing two runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out one.

A five run third inning sparked the Red Storm's 8-2 win over Providence in game two. Junior Jessica Cameron (Girard, Ohio) drove in two runs with a single to center and two other runners scored on illegal pitches by the Providence pitcher.

In game two, Allman allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five. For Providence, Cori Van Dusen gave up six earned runs on 10 hits.

The Red Storm return to action tomorrow at Boston College. The doubleheader is slated for noon.
