Freshman southpaw hurler Courtney Fitzgerald ( Bellerose, NY) was named BIG EAST co-rookie of the week. Fitzgerald helped St. John's to a 3-1 BIG EAST record this past week. She collected a 2-0 record for St. John's. In two appearances she started and completed both games. Courtney posted a 0.50 ERA and struck out 7 batters in 14 innings.

"This past week Courtney has not played like a freshman, she has matured ," coach Melody Cope said. "She picked up her play against UCONN when she was able to get out of a jam in the sixth inning with runners on second and third and that is how you expect an upperclassman to react."

In the 3-1 win against Boston College, Fitzgerald allowed one unearned run and struck out five.

Recording the win, Fitzgerald threw a complete game against BIG EAST rival UCONN, striking out two and only allowing six hits. The win marked the first ever sweep in St. John's softball history against UCONN.
