Red Storm Swept by Seton Hall in BIG EAST Opener
 

 
Jamaica, N.Y.  The St. Johns softball team dropped two to Seton Hall this afternoon in its BIG EAST home opener. The Red Storm fall to 10-16-1 (0-2 BIG EAST), while the Pirates improve to 14-7-0 (4-0 BIG EAST).

In game one, the Red Storm got on the board first, scoring one run in the third. Senior Cecelia Baston (Falmouth, Maine) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Jessica Cameron (Girard, Ohio). Senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) singled up the middle to drive in Baston. After three complete, SJU led 1-0.

The Pirates scored two in the fifth inning. Ranae Bart reached on a throwing error by the Red Storm pitcher and then stole second base. Bart would advance to third on a Darcy Djakalovic ground out and eventually score on a RBI single by McKenzie Richards. Lindsay Trottier singled to drive Richards home and give Seton Hall the 2-1 lead.

The Red Storm threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Ann Raab (Freehold, N.J.) singled to get the inning started and senior Kelly Houghton (Millsboro, Del.) reached on a fielders choice. Houghton advanced to second on a throwing error by the SHU third baseman and moved to third on a Cameron single. The Red Storm would leave two stranded to end the game.

For Seton Hall, Megan Meyer gave up one earned run, walked one and struck out four in 6.2 innings of work. Freshman Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) allowed seven hits, two unearned runs, one walk and struck out four in seven innings.

In the second game, Seton Hall opened the scoring in the top of the first with two runs on three hits and one error. The Red Storm would get one back in the bottom of the first. Argeras, who singled to lead off, scored on an RBI single by freshman Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) to put the score at 2-1.

Sandoval singled to lead off the bottom of the third for the Red Storm. Senior Tiffany Howerton (Escondido, Calif.) reached on a throwing error by the Seton Hall pitcher and Baston, pinch running for Sandoval, advanced to third. After freshman Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) drove in Baston and moved Howerton to third with a double, the Pirates made a pitching change. Casey McDevitt came in to replace Christina Shanko who gave up six hits and four runs in two innings. Howerton scored on a sacrifice fly by Raab and Houghton drove in Sainz with a double to give SJU the 4-2 lead after three.

Seton Hall came from behind in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on three hits and one error. Djakalovic singled up the middle to drive in two and eventually scored on a throwing error.

McDevitt earned the win for the Pirates, giving up four hits in five innings while striking out two and walking one. Allman, pitching her 10th complete game, allowed five runs, two earned, on 11 hits and struck out six.

The Red Storm return to action on Monday, April 1 when they travel to Syracuse to take on the Orangewomen at noon.
