Fall to 0-2 in BIG EAST
Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova University softball team hosted Saint John's University today in Big East doubleheader action. The Wildcats swept the Red Storm, defeating the visitors 3-2 and 4-0, improving their 2000 record to 15-7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big East. Game one was a tight battle throughout. St. John's got on the board in its first at-bat, but the Wildcats came back to tie things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back doubles by Heather Garboden and Melissa Crombet. The Red Storm scored in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead, but again Villanova responded with the tying run in the bottom of the third. Jackie Pasquerella reached on an error to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second base by senior Megan O'Leary. A Sara Carlson single that put runners at the corners was followed by a Regina Speicher sacrifice fly that brought home Pasquerella to knot the game at 2-2. The ballgame remained 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh when the Wildcats were able to get a run home. With one out, senior Mia Brickhouse walked. After Brickhouse stole second, Pasquerella came through with the game-winning hit, scoring Brickhouse and giving Villanova the 3-2 victory. Carrie Walpole was sharp on the mound for the 'Cats as she pitched a complete game three-hitter to up her record to 6-1 on the season. The afternoon's second game was equally exciting, but this time it was due to Villanova's pitcher, Keri Stoller. Stoller was sensational on the mound as the junior pitched the first no-hitter of her career. She struckout six, while walking only one, to improve her mark to 7-3 in 2000. One other Red Storm hitter reached on an error, but was eventually caught stealing, causing Stoller to face only one more batter than the minimum. At the plate for 'Nova, freshman Sara Carlson had a big game as she went two-for-three with two RBI's and a run scored.
Villanova will return to action on Tuesday, April 4, as they host Drexel University at 2:30pm .
