Jamaica, N.Y. The St. Johns softball team (10-14-1) dropped a 2-0 decision to Yale University (12-9-1) in the first game of a doubleheader. The second game was called a 1-1 tie after eight innings due to darkness.
In the first game, Yale got on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the first. Jesseka Bartholomew drove in Laura Beckert, who led off the inning with a walk, with an RBI single, giving Yale the 1-0 lead. Yale would add one more run in the sixth. Leah Kelley led off the inning with a double to centerfield and eventually scored on a Julia Bossett single. St. Johns would threaten in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) walked, junior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) reached on a throwing error by the catcher and freshman Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Red Storm. Senior Kelly Houghton (Millsboro, Del.) hit a ground ball to the third baseman, who caught Argeras at home, to end the Red Storm threat. Yales Jillian Miles gave up one hit, walked two and struck out two in seven innings. For St. Johns freshman Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out five. Yale would score first in the nightcap too. Beckert doubled to start the fourth inning, advanced to third on a fielders choice and scored on sacrifice fly by Bartholomew. The Red Storm would tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Jessica Cameron (Girard, Ohio) reached on an error by the Yale shortstop to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Argeras advanced Cameron to second. Sandoval singled up the middle, allowing Cameron to score. The next two innings would be scoreless and the game was called a 1-1 tie due to darkness. For Yale, Cara Denver gave up one earned run on two hits and struck out five in eight innings. Allman, pitching in 15 consecutive innings, allowed one run on three hits while striking out nine batters and walking just two.
The Red Storm open their BIG EAST season this weekend when they host Seton Hall at Noon.
