Queens, NY - The St. John's University softball team broke their six-game losing streak with a come-from-behind victory over Marist this afternoon at Red Storm Field. The scheduled second game of the doubleheader was stopped in the middle of the third inning due to lightning. The Red Storm improve to 18-28-1 overall, while the Red Foxes fall to 20-17. The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one, behind a two-RBI double to right center by Bridget Hurlman. However, the two runs would not be enough as St. John's came-from-behind to take game one, 5-2. In the bottom of the second inning, the Red Storm cut into the lead with a run. Junior Jo Sherlock (San Diego, CA) led off the inning with a triple to centerfield and would come around to score on a successful suicide attempt by classmate Jessica Marical (Stanton, CA) later in the inning. St. John's would play some little ball and take advantage of three Marist errors in the bottom of the sixth to post four runs for the would-be 5-2 final. After an error placed runners on the corners with no outs, senior Jillian Sandoval (Orange, CA) grounded to second, with freshman Danielle Estrada (Moreno Valley, CA) beating the throw home. Again with runners on the corners, the Red Storm attempted a steal and would score the game-winning run as the Marist third baseman dropped the pickoff throw to third. Sherlock followed with a RBI single through the right side, scoring pinch runner Bionka King (Grand Terrace, CA) from second. Sherlock moved to third on a stolen base and a passed ball, finally crossing the plate with the inning's final run on a RBI single to right field by senior Allina Sainz (San Diego, CA).
Senior Meghan Allman (San Diego, CA) settled down after the first inning troubles to blank the Red Foxes over the final six innings. Allman, who improves to 4-6 on the season, allowed the two runs on six hits, while striking out four in the complete game. The day's second game was called to due to lightning after two and a half innings with the Red Storm winning 1-0. The Red Storm return to BIG EAST action on Saturday, April 30, when they host Connecticut in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon. |
