Vernon, Conn. . Freshman Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) has been named the 2002 BIG EAST Womens Soccer Rookie of the Year, at the annual postseason banquet tonight. Schmidt was also named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team.
Schmidt became the first St. Johns women soccer player to be honored as Rookie of the Year. The only other St. Johns womens soccer player ever to be named to an All-BIG EAST team was Francesca DeCristoforo in 1997, who was honored as a member of the second team. The last Red Storm player to make the Rookie team was Courtney Rett (Valley Stream, N.Y.) in 2000. Kaitlin Schmidt backed up her Rookie of the Year honor, by leading all BIG EAST rookies this season in points with 26 and goals with 10, and tied in assists with 6. Her 26 points are the most ever by a rookie in St. Johns history and places her third on the all-time list. Meanwhile, her 10 goals are the second most by a St. Johns rookie and fourth all-time. Schmidt is also tied for the team lead in assists (6) with fellow freshman Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.). Schmidts points, goals and assists all rank in the top-10 in BIG EAST. During the season, Schmidt was a two-time BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, while also being honored by Soccer America and Soccer Buzz. St. Johns earned back-to-back conference tournament berths for the first time in program history this year. The Red Storm (9-6-4, 3-3 BIG EAST) awaits a NCAA or ECAC bid on Monday, November 11.
