Jamaica, N.Y. On Sunday, November 3, the St. Johns University womens soccer team will make its second appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament in as many years. For the first time in program history, the Red Storm have earned back-to-back conference championship berths. St. Johns, currently ranked ninth in the NSCAA/adidas Northeast regional poll, finished the regular season with a 9-5-4 overall record and a 3-3-0 mark in the BIG EAST.
St. Johns, the No. 4 seed from the Northeast Division, takes on the No. 1 seed in the Mid-Atlantic Division, West Virginia University at 2:00 p.m. at the Mountaineer Soccer Complex in Morgantown, W.Va.. The Mountaineers are currently ranked seventh in the NSCAA/adidas national poll with a 15-1-1 overall record and a 5-0-1 record in the BIG EAST. Leading the way offensively for the Red Storm has been sophomore forward Dominica Reina (Frankfort, N.Y.). Reina has 11 goals on the season leading the team and tying her for third in the BIG EAST. Reinas 11 goals, the most at St. Johns since 1994, currently places her tied for third on the all-time list for most goals in a season. She has stepped up for the Red Storm when they needed it, notching five game-winning goals. Reinas 11 goals along with three assists, places her second on the team and tied for sixth in the BIG EAST in points with 25. For the week of October 21, she was named BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Freshman forward Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) leads the team and is tied for third in the BIG EAST in points with 26, the most ever for a rookie in program history. Schmidts 10 goals, second on the team, and six assists, tied for most with fellow freshman Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.), both rank in the top-10 in the BIG EAST. One of the top rookies in the BIG EAST this season, Schmidt has been twice named the conferences Rookie of the Week. Junior defender Courtney Rett (Valley Stream, N.Y.) has been the anchor of this years defense. Starting all 18 games this season, Rett has made an impact in every aspect, frequently being asked to move up to forward in order to spark the offense. These moves have proved important, as Rett has come through with two game-winning goals, including the overtime goal against Virginia Tech, which qualified St. Johns for the BIG EAST Tournament. Rett was honored as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 21, while also twice being named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week. Senior goalkeeper Tina Fogg (Warwick, R.I.) has assembled a record breaking season, making her the most successful goalkeeper in St. Johns history. On the season, Fogg compiled a 6-4-4 record including three shutouts. Despite missing four games due to injury, she is still third in the BIG EAST in saves with 87. With her success this season, Fogg is now St. Johns all-time leader in wins with 28 and shutouts with 17. Fogg broke the shutout record of Sherry Reill, in the Red Storms 1-0 shutout of Seton Hall on October 18. With 308 career saves, Fogg is now only two saves shy of Carolyn Blohms school record. Fogg was recognized for her shutouts record by being honored as the BIG EAST and ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week and being named to the Soccer Amercia Team of the Week for the week of October 21.
