St. Johns Tops Virginia Tech, 2-1 in Overtime
Red Storm Headed to BIG EAST Tournament

Jamaica, N.Y. Junior Courtney Rett propelled the St. Johns University womens soccer team into the BIG EAST Tournament with the gamewinning goal over Virginia Tech, 17 seconds into the first overtime. As the winner of tonights Northeast Division matchup, the Red Storm (9-4-4, 3-3) secure the final spot in the conference tournament.

At 90:17, Rett (Valley Stream, N.Y.) sent a blast from the front of the net past Virginia Techs goalkeeper to win the game. Senior Theresa Bulman (Glenside, Pa.) set up the play for the goal by sending a pass along the left side. Freshman Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) picked up Bulmans pass and sent it across the field to senior Joanna Dawson (Staten Island, N.Y.). Dawson, who returned to action tonight after missing the last two games with a knee injury, pushed the ball into the center outside the 18 yard mark for Rett.

St. Johns got on the board first with a goal by Schmidt at 14:14. Freshman Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.) sent a short pass to sophomore Dominica Reina (Frankfort, N.Y.). Reina found Schmidt with a long pass along the middle. Schmidt then shed two Virginia Tech defenders and sent a blast from the lower corner of the box over the goalies head. Schmidts 10th goal of the season gave the Red Storm the 1-0 lead.

Virginia Tech (5-10-1, 2-3) knotted the game at one at 60:39 on a penalty kick by Kathy Holdsworth. Following a St. Johns foul in the box, Holdsworth sent a shot to the far side of the net past Red Storm goalkeeper Tina Fogg (Warwick, R.I.).

Just seconds after the penalty kick, the Hokies committed a foul in their own box. Reina took the Red Storm penalty shot, but Virginia Techs goalie Natasha Dirda got a good read on the ball and kept the game tied at one.

In the last 10 minutes of play, the Red Storm got numerous opportunities to score, including a hit post by Reina. Dirda hung tough for the Hokies, stopping 11 Red Storm shots on goal.

St. Johns outshot Virginia Tech, 22 to 15. Fogg made seven saves for the Red Storm.

As the No. 4 seed in the Northeast Division, St. Johns will face the No. 1 seed in the Mid-Atlantic Division, West Virginia. The game is slated for Sunday, November 3 at 2 p.m. in Morgantown, W.Va.

The Red Storm conclude their regular season at home on Sunday, October 27 versus Georgetown at 1 p.m.
