Stony Brook, NY Joanna Dawson sparked the Red Storm offense, coming off the bench to net two goals and dish out one assist to put St. Johns ahead of Stony Brook, 4-2, at University Field on Sunday afternoon. St. John's finishes its season with an 11-8-0 mark, while Stony Brook falls to 7-9-1.
The Sea Hawks struck first, 17 minutes into the game, when Lisa Mariano beat the St. Johns defense and crossed the ball to Lauren Canino for the score. After not capitalizing on numerous chances, St. John's battled back and was finally able to take advantage of a slower Stony Brook defense when Diane Abeles (Glendale, Calif.) broke through, netting her first goal of the season. Joanna Dawson (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Marissa Stork (Flushing, N.Y.) had the assists on the play. The Red Storm pulled ahead less than six minutes later when Dawson took a shot from the left side of the goal. The ball slipped through the Stony Brook goalkeepers hands and found its way to the back of the net after hitting the inside of the cross bar, giving St. Johns a 2-1 lead at the half. Dawson netted the eventual game-winner at the 49:55 mark when she took a through ball from Jaime Clark (Massapequa, NY) and beat the keeper for her second goal of the game. Stony Brook pulled to within one in the 60th minute of play with a breakaway goal by Kerri McCabe, but the Red Storm sealed the victory at the 89:41 mark. The Sea Hawks defense was playing up in order to to tie, but Lisa Rinaldi (Montreal, Canada) cleared the ball over the unit to Carr. With the goalkeeper far outside the box, Carr took the wide open shot that Clark followed into goal, giving St. Johns the 4-2 victory. With the goal, Clark finished the season with a team leading 20 points (5 goals, 10 assists). The Red Storm ends the season with 133 points as a team, netting 40 goals and dishing out 53 assists, the most in St. John's women's soccer history. The 133 points topped the mark set by the 1994 BIG EAST Championship squad that netted 41 goals on 35 assists for 117 points. Also, with the victory over Stony Brook, the 2000 season marks the second straight year that the Red Storm has not lost to an opponent outside of the BIG EAST. Although the Red Storm failed to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament, they will await the decision of the ECAC for a bid in this years ECAC Tournament. St. Johns was selected for the 1999 tourney, only to fall to Villanova, 1-0, in the championship game.
