St. John's Loses First Half Lead, Falls To UCONN in Storrs 4-1

Storrs, CT -- The St. Johns womens soccer team (8-8-1, 3-3) entered play with a chance at the top seed in the BIG EAST conference tourney with an upset win over the 14th ranked Huskies tonight in Storrs, CT. UCONN ended any upset bid midway through the second half to prevail by scoring four unanswered goals for a 4-1 BIG EAST win. A post-season berth in the conference tournament is still a possibility after the regular season ends this week as SJU finishes with a 3-3 mark in league play.

Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y./St. Anthonys) put a scare into the Huskies faithful scoring at 19:02 of the first half on a feed from sophomore midfielder Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) to give St. Johns a 1-0 lead that they took into the locker room at the intermission.

UCONN (9-4-2, 4-1) found its groove late in the second half and put together a scoring barrage of four tallies off St. Johns goalkeeper Tracey Rollings (Devon, England/Paignton Community College). Coach Len Tsantiris squad would outshoot the upset-minded Red Storm 29-7 in the game.

St. Johns last beat UCONN in 1994 with a 1-0 victory to give first year coach Ian Stone and the program its only BIG EAST crown. The Red Storm played with confidence and poise in the first 45 minutes of play for an evenly played battle that saw UCONN outshoot SJU 7-3.

Stars for UCONN were junior Kristen Graczyk who scored two goals and amassed 12 shots (her first at 63:11 to tie the game and the game winner two minutes later at 65:57). Kristi Lefebvre also tallied a goal and an assist in the win. Goaltender Erin Rice earned the win with seven saves and one goal against.
