St. John's Ties No. 14 Villanova, 1-1

Villanova, Pa. The St. Johns University womens soccer team played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime with No. 14 Villanova this afternoon. Todays tie breaks the Wildcats streak of six wins over St. Johns. The Red Storm were 2-0-1 this past week, including shutouts of both Rutgers and Seton Hall, improving their overall record to 8-4-4. The Wildcats, who had won five in a row going into todays game, are now 10-1-4 on the year.

At the 23:33 mark of the first half, Villanova took the game's first lead as Lindsey Finnegan found Laura Johnson with a touch pass on the left side of the net. Johnson sent the ball to the left side of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Red Storm 10 to 4 and taking five corner kicks. Villanova had many scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes, including one from the center front of the net that was saved by junior defender Claudia Rubino (Montreal North, Canada). Senior goalkeeper Tina Fogg (Warwick, R.I.) stopped five Villanova shots to keep the game a 1-0 at the break.

With 19:07 remaining in the game, junior Courtney Rett (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and freshman Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.) teamed up to knot the game at 1. From the far side of the box, Henderson served the ball into the center, which Rett headed passed the Wildcats goalie. Rett now has three goals on the year, while Henderson has five assists.

Villanova had chances to break the tie in the end of regulation and overtime, but were unable to capitalize. With time winding down in the second half, Fogg punched out a Villanova shot and could not maintain control of the ball. The Wildcats sent the deflected shot back, but the crossbar stopped the shot and kept the game tied at 1. In the second overtime period, senior defender Jen Taylor (South Hempstead, N.Y.), who returned to the starting lineup today for the first time since October 6, made a key defensive save from the goal line. The Red Storm defense pulled together to shutout Villanova for the remainder of the game.

Fogg had a number of outstanding saves for the Red Storm finishing with a career-high 15 stops. For Villanova, Chrissy Dolan made nine saves. The Wildcats outshot St. Johns 26 to 11 in the game. Only 17 of Villanovas shots were on goal, while 10 of the Red Storms 11 were on goal.

The Red Storm conclude their schedule versus Northeast division opponents on Friday, October 25th at 4:00pm versus Virginia Tech at Belson Stadium.
