St. Johns Upsets
No. 19 Syracuse, 1-0

Jamaica, N.Y. The Red Storm womens soccer team upset the No. 19-ranked Syracuse Orangewomen, 1-0, in a thrilling match this afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field. St. Johns now has three wins in BIG EAST play, their most since the 1997 season.

Todays win also marks the first time in program history that SJU has defeated Syracuse. The all-time series, which began in 1996, now stands at 4-1-1.

Junior Erin Zambelli (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem High School) scored the eventual gamewinner at 32:58 on a one on one with the goalie off a breakaway. This goal is St. Johns first-ever goal versus Syracuse.

I thought the girls deserved this victory against a good nationally-ranked team, St. Johns Head Coach Ian Stone said of his team, who have won three of their last four. Todays win is the end result of the hard work they have put in throughout the course of the season.

The Red Storm put together an overall great performance today. Defenders Jen Taylor (South Hempstead, N.Y./Southside) and Courtney Rett (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) allowed the Orangewomen just seven shots, including just four shots on goal. Midfielder Joanna Dawson (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa Academy) and forward Lisa Kaczmarski (Lancaster, N.Y./Clarence High School) used their outstanding speed to continually beat Syracuse. Midfielder Lisa Rinaldi (St. Leonard, Canada/Laurier McDonald) appears to have fully recovered from her injury, hustling for every ball and recording two shots.

Syracuse had one last shot to tie it when Megan Huez took a shot at 87:10, but SJU goalie Tina Fogg (Warwick, R.I./Warwick Veterans Memorial) was able to make a good save to secure the win.

Syracuse goalie Shannon Myers stopped six Red Storm shots while allowing just one goal. For St. Johns, Fogg recorded four saves and her third shutout of the season.

The Red Storm (4-6-0, 3-2-0) now moves ahead of Syracuse (6-4-0, 2-3-0) in the BIG EAST Northeast Division standings with a 3-2 conference record.

St. Johns returns to action on Friday, October 12 when they travel to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish at 7:00pm.
