STORRS, CONN. -- The St. John's University women's soccer team dropped its third straight game, losing a 5-0 decision to #11 ranked Connecticut last night at Morrone Stadium.
UCONN outshot SJU, 26-3, but Red Storm goalkeeper Tina Fogg (Warwick, R.I./Warwick Veterans Memorial) turned in a valiant performance stopping 10 shots, several on acrobatic saves to keep the game close. The Huskies (4-2) got the only goal they needed at 12:12 of the first half on a direct kick from Jessica Gjertsen for a 1-0 lead. Gjertsen would score two goals on the night, teaming with Kristen Graczyk, who netted two goals of her own to pace UCONN. Lacey Toupa had the final goal of the game and Alexa Borisjuk added two assists in the Huskies win. SJU (1-4) stayed close, trailing just 2-0 at the intermission but Connecticut dominated play, outshooting the Red Storm 11-1 in the first 45 minutes of play. Strong performances were turned in by midfielder Joanna Dawson (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa Academy) and defender Courtney Rhett (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) in a losing effort. Connecticut committed 13 fouls to SJU's nine, but the Huskies pressured the Red Storm for most of the game and gained a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks on the night. Erin Zambelli (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem), Heather Cook (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Lutheran) and Karyn Lundgren (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) had the Red Storm's three shots on goal. Lundgren had the best scoring chance, but UCONN reserve goalie Shanna Caldwell made a diving stop to save the shutout bid late in the second half for the Huskies.
The Red Storm return to action on Saturday, September 22 at 2 p.m., when they travel to Fordham for a non-conference clash in the Bronx against their local rival.
